Who owns communication towers

The provincial government is not the decision-maker for towers on Crown land. Municipal siting processes do not apply to Crown lands. Compensation does not fall under the structure of the Surface Rights Act. Compensation is negotiated bilaterally between the landowner and the developer. Since it does not fall under the Surface Rights Act , there is no recourse for nonpayment of annual recourse.

If a landowner desires periodic review, this should be articulated in the contract. The type of infrastructure will depend on the need. The size, design, and height of the communication tower will depend on the need in the area. The communications hut is typically approximately 12' x 12' feet and the tower may be anchored with a concrete pillar or guy wires. The size of the site itself will vary.

A landowner may request bushes or tress to limit the aesthetic impact to the surrounding area. Lighting is determined by Transport Canada standards. The Alberta Utilities Commission AUC gets involved when the tower is part of a power plant, substation or transmission line. The role of the AUC on communications towers can be a source of confusion for landowners.

The AUC makes decisions on power plant, transmission, and substation applications for Alberta, but the communications tower itself still falls under ISED Canada jurisdiction. Communications towers proposed as part of transmission lines and substations are subject to right of entry, but are usually placed within the footprint of a substation, with landowner consent. Communications towers normally remain in place long-term. At this time, the need for communications connectivity is indefinite, so a landowner should anticipate that a communications tower will remain in place for many years.

The structure itself may have a life between years, and may be changed as technology improves. The company must follow the federal health and safety guidelines. ISED Canada requires the proponent to attest to good engineering practices and follow radiofrequency exposure limits outlined in Health Canada's Safety Code 6. Operational complaints should be directed federally to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. You may also lose your signal if a lot of people are attempting to use the cell tower at the same time. That often leads to calls getting dropped. While driving, your phone can switch from one cell tower to the next mid-conversation. As you continue your journey, the cell phone will pick the strongest signal and release the weaker cell tower, making it available to another caller.

Another factor that could affect your signal is a problem with the cell tower. One of the most bizarre are the Facebook posts claiming that 5G has created the coronavirus pandemic.

While definitely a little on the radical side, there are still some health concerns about 5G that are a bit more grounded in science. In a year or so, 5G will be available throughout the United States.

While 4G delivers 10 Mbps, 5G will deliver peak speeds between 10 and 20 Gbps. While 5G has not caused the coronavirus, are there other dangers lurking on cell towers across the United States? So what are these Facebook conspiracy theorists claiming about 5G? This increase in radiofrequency radiation will supposedly lead to cancer, premature aging and disruption in cell metabolism thanks to damage done to human DNA.

Well, not to be an alarmist, but RFR can also be found in your microwave, radios and other daily activities and common household items.

Even computer monitors. What are these dangerous circumstances? This includes x-rays and gamma rays. Non-ionizing RFR, like those found coming from cell towers, have no known mechanism that causes biological effects or DNA mutations. So 5G is a new technology — a stronger technology. Should people be concerned? Many conspiracy theories point towards the fact that 5G will require more transmitters.

Since there are more popping up in cities, towns and neighborhoods, will the dose be higher? The electromagnetic radiation you withstand by walking outside is far greater than a 5G cell tower. The FCC has also stated that there are no health problems currently associated with cell towers.

While scientists are continuing to look into 5G technology and possible health risks, there is currently nothing to support that 5G cell towers do real harm to humans or animals. As technology continues to advance, more and more cell towers will crop up around the United States.

But as we await 5G technology, there are still over , cell towers around the nation that ensure we get cell phone service almost everywhere we go.

At Millman National Land Service , we ensure these cell towers are not only meeting health and safety standards, but are working as originally intended. Previous Next. View Larger Image. What is a Cell Tower? How Do Cell Towers Work?
