The pen has a small camera by the nib that captures your scribbles as you write them down in a special notebook more on that in a second. You don't have to have your phone on you at all to use it. It takes a bit of training, but I had to work hard to make myself wait for the beep before I started writing the result was a lot of notes where the first letter of the first word was missing.

Other than that hiccup, the pen is flawless in its capture of your myriad of scribbles. The pen keeps track of where it is based on markers in the paper itself and sorts out what goes where when you upload it to the app. The app itself is a solid performer. Once your notes are uploaded, you can have the app transcribe your notes as well as highlight or change the color of individual lines in your digital notebook.

You can also share your transcribed pages or export the image of the page to another app. Tags can be added to organize content, but you can only add them after the fact.

I'd love it if there was some sort of shorthand I could use while taking notes to automatically add tags. Actually, there totally could be, but this is where Moleskine falls down - beyond the basic "this is how you get your words from the page into your phone," there's no easy-to-access reference of things you can do with the Smart Writing System.

It could very well be out there, but I've been unable to find it. It gets my handwritten notes into a format that I can peruse wherever I am, even if I've left my notebook at home. For me, that's more than enough to justify the cost of the system. Would I like to be able to work a little more efficiently in the system? Is that going to keep me from using it? Right now there are only a handful of compatible Paper Tablets and Smart Planners.

Part of the fun of Moleskine is the wonderful themed notebooks be they licensed characters or eye-catching designs. Not that I don't love an excuse to buy more Moleskines, but a little part of me rankles whenever I pick up one of my normal notebooks and I know I that its contents will be forever trapped there.

Also, Moleskine, could you pretty please add a bookmark to the Paper Tablets? Minor complaints aside, after using Moleskine's Smart Writing System for a month, I can confidently say there's no other way I'd rather take notes. While apps are nice for jotting down quick thoughts, you're locked in to a format.
